PBS Airs Documentary on Adventist Church
Airs April 8 on Maryland Public Television at 8 PM |

 Journey Films has completed a new project called "The Adventists," a one-hour documentary film on Seventh-day Adventists and their unique approach to health and healing. The film will begin broadcasting on PBS stations in April.
The film looks at the surprising life spans and fitness of the practicing members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Studies have shown that Adventists live on the average nearly ten years longer than other people. In terms of hospitals and health care, Adventists are often on the cutting edge. One story in the film shows a proton accelerator, a state-of-the-art method to split an atom to laser-target cancerous growths. Also featured is Dr. Leonard Bailey of Loma Linda, California, who gained international fame in the 1980s when he transplanted the heart of a baboon into a dying child who came to be known as Baby Fae. The film follows Dr. Bailey as he transplants the hearts and saves the lives of two children from the same family.
Filmmaker Martin Doblmeier observes, "Today the Adventist focus on wholeness and health has made them one of the healthiest faith groups in America. This fact alone speaks to an American audience increasingly interested in ways to extend and improve life. Our current debate on health care reform would be better informed by understanding the benefits of wellness and prevention as practiced by this community."
While focusing mostly on contemporary stories, the film also contains a re-enactment of key events leading to the church's founding and archival images of its links with John Harvey Kellogg and the Battle Creek Michigan sanitarium of early 20th century fame.
The film was written and directed by Martin Doblmeier (who also wrote and produced Bonhoeffer and The Power of Forgiveness), produced by Dan Juday and edited by Gayle Anonuevo. Starting Sunday, February 22 at 6:00 PM, the 8-week, doctor-led series on overcoming depression, the Depression Recovery Program, will begin. Dr.Neil Nedley, depression specialist, leads out in a video series to inform participants of his clinical success in treating the disease with natural alternatives to drug and psychotherapy. The title for Session 1 of this stimulating series is “Identifying Depression and Its Causes.” The public is invited to attend at no charge.
The total cost of attending the full eight-week program is $99 which includes the Depression: the Way Out, Feeling Good, SOS: Help for Emotions, (all textbooks) Depression Recovery Program Workbook, a classical music CD, one of each flavor of the Uplift bar, and a closing banquet complete with delicious, healthy foods. There are grants available for those with need to attend at no or reduced cost.
